More about Dr. Robin Foster, PhD, CAAB, CHBC
Animals have always been the defining element of my life and work. I hold a PhD in Animal Behavior from the University of Washington, and a dual BS in Biology and Psychology from the University of Michigan. For 20 years as a professor at the University of Puget Sound, I conducted research in animal learning and social behavior, and taught courses in Learning & Behavior, Animal Communication, Behavior Genetics, and Research Methods & Applied Statistics. I retired from full time teaching in 2011 and currently hold positions as Research Professor in Psychology at the University of Puget Sound and Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington. I am currently chair of the Animal Behavior Society Applied Animal Behavior Committee, a board member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, and a Certified Fear Free Professional member and speaker.
Over the years my practical experience with animals has included working for the Humane Society, consulting at the Seattle Animal Shelter, serving as the Kirkland Dog Off-leash Group behavior consultant, and showing English and Gordon Setters in conformation. In my practical work with horses, I've worked as a stable groom and trainer's assistant at Emerald Downs, and owned and bred thoroughbred horses.
My research has included a variety of species, from horses and dogs, to rodents, fish, and bees. For the past decade my work has focused on horses and dogs, with a mission to promote welfare and improve human-animal interactions. Currently I'm working on a few new research projects on dog and horse behavior and cognition.
